New Songdo Exists!

If you are about to move to New Songdo City, as of August 2011, the city does in fact exist.  I don’t know why you can’t find pictures beyond the computer generated models.  It’s a quiet city, but there are people here and it doesn’t look like the construction zone I imagined.

We arrived Monday, the first of August and since then it has been and will continue to be GO GO GO!  We do have a good mix of school orientation and cultural/living orientation, but the days are packed.  Even tonight, I opted to stay home and try to do some unpacking instead of going to dinner.

Chadwick has been incredible.  Our president and our headmaster along with many other staffers picked us up from the airport, handed us a wad of money and took us home, to a high-rise called Well County.  There are three phases of the development so far and we live in the newest–the 300s.  Our internet phone and cable was already set up and the school is working out all kinds of incredible deals on internet and iphones and anything else we can imagine. Our first full day here we got an extensive school tour.  The school will get its own post soon because it is beyond belief.  We knew it would be impressive, but it is actually over the top.  They also handed us all brand new Macbook Pros.  Today they took us to Costco and will arrange a bus for us once a month to get out there.

We’ve been around town a bit and I’m happy to report that there’s lots of busy restaurants and bars.  There are grocery stores, an animal hospital, an organic grocer, nice parks, bike lanes, etc etc.

The jet lag is kind of killing me so I’m over and out for now.  I’ll get some photos up eventually to hopefully provide a better idea of the actual state of Songdo beyond the computer fly-throughs from 3 years ago.
